Is this a bad sign of things to come for U.S.?

www.miamiherald.com/2012/02/11/2637287/lawmakers-singling-out-poor-or.html Some suspected that the Rick Scott governorship would be extremely good for the well-to-do, and he did mention a few things here and there which would be very hard on the poor (before he got elected). While most of this going on now is not coming from him but from Republican legislators, it does make one wonder if indeed Republicans are out to destroy, not poverty, but the poor! I definitely understand that it's an aberration that welfare money is given over the same food stamps card; when I first heard of this I couldn't believe it. Basically it was cart blanche for anyone on welfare to go anywhere. So many have. Who knows how long government has known that these cards were being used at ATM machines in Florida casinos and even to take trips to Vegas!!! But, just like hundreds of ideas to fix and/ or eliminate all this nonsense crosses my mind, I would suppose that even better ones cross the minds of some of our lawmakers! That, though, should not include penalizing the very poor who do need help to keep living. Regarding the unemployed man who was getting $400 a week, my dear God, I've known people over almost 30 years who have lived on SSI (Supplemental Security Income) since then, and only now are receiving around $680 a MONTH! That is it, nothing else. And besides, Social Security Administration would not allow their spouse to make the smallest amount of income, simply because SS expects them both to live on that amount, period. In a way those few couples that I know have their hands tied; if one of them gets even a bit of money, the SSA's check is slashed. But to be fair this has been always like this, even under repeated Democrat administrations. My question is, do most poor, or middle-class Americans who are fast becoming less middle-class, think hard about this situation? My biggest question, though, is how could so many Republicans have been elected governors (look at Wisconsin's huge problems now), and also senators, after all they did say they were going to tighten the screws as much as possible.
